Found the passwords !

yes we know a blog is supposed to be err…. well… up to date , but we have been busy over the last few months, Christmas, Easter, staff coming and going. So we are going to try a bit harder !

The shop is looking fabulous but not many customers, we are doing extremely well with our own published book The Ferry Birds by Helen Dunmore. We have sold nearly 500 copies and expect to sell over a thousand copies by the end of the summer. Rick Stein has opened a chippie and Ron had food poisoning , its true one oyster !Ron is off to the Book Industry Conference in London on Sunday,  the book world may never be the same…

Here comes summer !

Which means that we start to open until 9pm six nights a week, that’s a busy time for our booksellers. We have had a wonderful signing with Darren Shan , lots of star struct teenagers carrying in every book they own, written by him. Saturday sees Michael Foreman and Phil Moran with the latest Soggy Book ‘Soggy and the Golden Treasure.’ It’s hot so I’m not going to put on the bear costume this year. Saturday the 11th july Tessa Hainsworth signs her delightful’ up with the larks’ her move from London exec to postwomen seems a good move ? I was thinking to change from provincial bookseller to postman ,it sometimes sounds attractive.
Please don’t bring pasties into the shop if you visit us…we find the seagulls follow you in !

books

Some good sales for ‘Grow your own drugs’  James Wong ,Collin, its the book of the TV series . Having examined the book I find that the recipe for a memory booster is 1 Bottle of wine and 5 sprigs of rosemary. You place the rosemary in the wine for 2 weeks and then drink a small glass after dinner. Hmm … personally it seems a waste of wine to me , I would rather have a large glass with the dinner and use the rosemary to cook potatoes with.

We had an author event last night Emily Barr ,which went well, unfortunatly  Hailey, a brilliant bookseller but prone to over embibing has lost all her keys, that is our shop keys as well, she is leaving soon…

The other book which is rather naff but really heartwarming is ‘A lion called Christian’ the lion cub was bought from a well known london depatment store in the 60s. Eventually iafter many years as a pet around the kings road, was repatriated to a zoo park in africa. And when the guys came to see the lion a year or so later it  recognised them in a remarkable reunion. See it on You Tube.

So our street is still being dug up by the gas board but spring is nearly here and we are planning our easter displays and author events. On the horizon is an event with Damian Horner and his wife about selling and moving to france… and even further a book to be published by our own publishing arm Mabecron Books about two birds who get on a ferry… every year for 6 years, I can’t say to much more but its likly to be written by a very famous author and is an enchanting story set here in cornwall.

Penguin … nice people

Had a good meeting with the Penguin rep and his sales director today, they are keen to provide a varied promotion for indies. Its difficult to come up with a promotion which does not use price as a hook. Price always has a double edge ,maybe good for our customer but most probably bad for the profit and reinforces the perception that books are exspensive. General books are very good value and have not risen in price for a number of years . Best subscribed book Anthony Beevor D-Day, out in May. Lots of returns being done today and they are still digging the street up outside, we have had a new gas main being put into the road, they started in November and will finish the day before good friday. So thats been great ! Have a good book launch on thursday 26th March  with Emily Barr at 6.30 wine and friends.  Ron

Today

Yes today was a bit slow, so we discussed the death of the book and the encrouching world of the ebook. Will we have any customers in five years ? or two ? or ten ? We did sell a textbook though for £55 ! which was £12 about 5 years ago ! And an icelandic saga which was the highlight of the day. Pasty for lunch again.
